Photography

For my magazine I will need a variety of shots. I plan on taking some of the pictures mention in my plan below and any others that I feel will suit the location at the time. Whilst I do believe that planning is vital in a photoshoot I also agree that some of the best photos are natural shots that are take spontaneously.

I found the photoshoot a difficult task to undertake, we were very pressured for time and lacked creative spaces to photograph the model in. Also due to our lack of artificial lighting we had to use natural light and due to it being a gloomy day it was hard to capture nicely balanced shots. As I used my best friend to model it was quite an easy and comfortable environment to work in meaning that we could work quite quickly and try a lot of different poses. I tried to take inspiration from other magazines that I had seen whilst still keeping them unique and I was very critical of my own work so we struggle finding backdrops and sets that were suitable.
Overall I am happy with the photos I have taken. I feel that I have a good variety of shots and some that are well suited to being cover photos. I believe that they are of good quality and look authentic. I do think however that my pictures lack vibrancy of colour and I feel that I should have been more adventurous with the colours that I had my model wearing therefore I will have to change that during the editing process. I also feel that I could have tried different lighting and other angles to create more variety in my selection but collectively I am pleased. I also wish that I had colour copies of the black and white photos. (The two photos I am going to use as cover photos have been captioned)

Article Design Inspiration

Below is some article design inspiration for my two page spread, from this I can  plan how to design my version of an article and what to write the article about. I can include some consistent conventions from all of them in my magazine.

Article Ideas:
Celebrity Look for Less
Trending Fashion Pieces - (use different models and have them style different outfits)
Celebrity Fashionista Interview

Typical Fashion Magazine Content

As part of the research project for my fashion magazine I am going to explore the typical and consistent content of the leading fashion magazines. This will give me inspiration for my magazine and help me create ideas for two varying stories.

Company:
Company: From this contents page I can see that there are four main components that make up the magazine.  one of them is a high street edit which are pages of the top picks from the high street. This is good for appealing to the target audience as Company have a younger demographic who when buying clothes may not have a big enough budget to afford designer so instead they go for high street alternatives. As it is also the age of studying they may not have all the free time to go and dig of the fashion gems and which is why it is a successful feature to have pages of them already hand picked for you.
It also has a section all about celebrities and not only their fashion but just interviews about their lifestyle and daily habits which is a nice way to break up the magazine, and to follow the conventions of magazines and make it seem less like a catalogue. These interviews are something to base my fashion article (double-page spread) on.
As well as these two main features it also has some small other sections which are based on social media. This could be vital when aiming at a younger demographic as that is their  primary form of communication and connection with the outside world.
Elle: Elle is divided in to two main categories, there is a box that displays content that is featured in every issue and these aren't fashion related items, they are lifestyle. There is also a health and beauty edit that like company covers others components of appearance not just clothes. Elle contents page also then has other articles that are about fashion inspiration and celeb features. These again will be the sorts of things I will consider featuring in my magazine.
Allure has a slightly different approach to the content of its magazine. Rather than being a lifestyle based fashion magazine it features more fashion articles, and talks to celebrities about their clothing and appearance preferences. It also contains a little box that describes and explains what is happening on the front cover. It has no clear sub headings and is just displayed in a varying order rather than being sectioned within the magazine. It is clear that it is aimed at a younger audience because the content is all things that relate to the younger generation for example, there are again features about social media and about festivals which stereotypically are associated with younger people. This magazine contains features about music and make up also.
CONSISTENT FEATURES INCLUDE: high street fashion edits, celeb interviews, music edits, beauty edits, social media edit, look for less edit.

Subgenres

Fashion is presented in a variety of different magazines. Within other genres of magazine there are clear and very defined sub-genres that are aimed at niche audiences however with fashion the magazines, the only vague  subgenres  are age and often occupation categorised.

From my research the only subgenre I could find within fashion magazines was Bazaar which is a magazine portraying sophisticated fashion and is aimed at ladies who work or are looking for a sophisticated image.
All the others I found follow the typical conventions of mainstream fashion magazines.

Bazaar:
In Bazaar the content is usually about sophisticated and often professional fashion but that still allow women to look and feel confident within themselves and their appearance. It appeals to the older more sophisticated reader by being quite polished and sleek looking, with only one picture on the cover, no spots/plugs and a simple colour scheme. It is aimed at young professional women and you can see that from the content indicated by the cover lines. 'The Power Piece: The Killer Pencil Skirt'  Women of the age 25-30 are very work driven and are into looking good and taking care of themselves for work and this magazine caters for this. It does also include some typical mainstream fashion. Also you can gage from this cover who the target audience is as it has lots of materialistic features within which 25-30 year old women can afford as they have more disposable income. Another way to tell it apart from other mainstream fashion magazines is the fact that the celebs head is behind the masthead and although her appearance is still flawless its a lot more sultry. The lighting is also harder on this magazine and creates harsher shadows on her face, body and in the background.

To conclude there aren't any clear or defined subgenres, and in order to make my magazine look authentic I am interested in making a mainstream fashion magazine.

Magazine Covers Analysis

The fashion magazine industry is a tough one and so in order to generate sales the front cover must appeal to the audience and stand out from the rest. Below is an analysis of the competitions front covers. It will highlight the successful and consistent features that appear on the lead magazines.

Company Magazine
Masthead: The masthead of this magazine is one that covers the whole top of the magazine. In this issue it is behind the main picture of the girl on the front which shows the audience that the company are very confident in their branding, in that although part of it is covered, people are still able to recognise what the magazine is. It is written in a serif font in a light blue shade. This is cool toned colour and carries connotations of confidence and tranquillity that could appeal to the audience by indicating what is in the magazine. I like this feature and would consider using it as part of my cover.
Main cover image: The main cover image is quite a relaxed image. Although the girl is looking straight at the camera, which appeals directly to the reader, her positioning is quite laid back, giving a welcoming and less intimidating feel. This would appeal to the demographic because they are young girls and may lack self confidence so don't want to feel pressured of being judged. The background that the photo is take against appears to be a room that you would find in a home and contains quite soft, earthy and neutral tones. This again gives a welcoming feel to the cover and invites the audience to buy the magazine. The lady on the front cover has been presented in a dominant ideological way as she has flawless makeup and hair. This is to sell the idea of perfection and to promote the content of the magazine.  This also makes her look young and youthful which will attract the demographic as they are of a similar age and so it is more relatable.
Cover Lines: This magazine has an interesting style of cover lines.  Each one is written in a different font from the next and they are all of varying sizes. Some are serif and some are sans serif. This could indicate to the audience the varying significance of all the stories within the magazine but still draw them magazine in order to read more. within the cover line references to social media and other forms of the magazine are used for example hashtags which will encourage the reader to get involved on many multimedia platforms. Stereotypically younger generations are supposedly more technological and so will have access to these sites which is good as this is what the magazines are targeting. There are no pull quotes on this front cover. There is however a spot which contains text claiming that it is a special issue. This would have been done as a promotional features as it is more prominant to the eye and so will intrigue the reader.
The Left Third: The left third on this cover has a lot more content than others in this genre and is therefore very unique and attractive to this magazine. It contains a lot of pictures and features that in the magazine and act as taster of the content inside. This is what the target audience will like to see and could be persuasive to them. Its more aesthetically pleasing and involves less reading which is what a target audience would be looking for when selecting magazines.
Colours: The colours on this cover are all matching and the fonts, spots, and the girls clothes all match. This gives a professional, polished feel but is also soothing to the readers as they are quite calm and peaceful, pastel shades. They also reflect the season that the magazine was published in as pastel shades usually carry conotations of spring / summer which is when it was released.

Allure:
Masthead: Similarly to Company, Allure have their masthead positioned behind the main cover photo. This once again shows the brand's confidence but it also shows the significance of the lady on the front and her role within the magazine. This time the colour is red which is a colour associated with strength and power. This could mean that the  company are trying to present to the audience how good their magazine is and that it is reputable.
Main Cover Image: Again the format of the cover image is much like the one seen on Company's front cover. It has Lauren placed central but has her body language quite relaxed. This then portrays onto the reader. She is looking at the camera again which has a direct appeal to the audience but her head it positioned at an angle that is not harsh and intimidating. The clothes she is wearing depict the season that the magazine is released at and are also young and youthful, which could appeal to the demographic.  Again she is being presented in an idelogical way with the perfect hair and makeup which can appeal to the audience. The background of this photo is outside and you can tell this from the sand and blurred foliage behind her. This gives a sense of freedom and nature which contrasts with the content but gives the reader a false impression of being natural. It makes all the conscienceness of image less fake and materialistic. it appears that the
Cover Lines: The cover lines are in varying fonts and sizes and are a mix between serif and sans serif fonts. They all indicate that the content is about appearance which appeals to the target audience as the demographic of this magazine is young women and stereotypically that is what they enjoy and spend their time and money on. The varying colour and sizes have different effects on the audience that could potentially draw them in.  There are no pull quotes on this front cover or any spots.
The Left Third: The left third of this issue  is very simple yet effective. It contains three simple but different cover lines that are hooks to the reader. One is a rhetorical question that could interest an audience and below it has a page reference which indicates that you could read further information if you pick the magazine up. It has quite generic cover lines that don't indicate or relate to the cover image but that could be done as a promotional feature because it could lead them to then picking it up to have a look at the rest of the cover.
Colours: The colours on this cover are mainly primary shades. This gives an air of simplicity but sophistication which, is what the target audience can relate to.  Red again shows power and authority which is what the magazine could be trying to make their readers feel and blue is calm yet confident.

Elle:
Masthead: This magazine has a different approach to the masthead. Instead of being in front of or behind the main cover image it has been spread around it. This means that masthead has covered to whole top of the cover and is central. The masthead unlike most other magazines in this genre has a coverline in the middle of it. This takes away from the headline but it  shows the confidence that the coming have in their name. It is written in a sans serif font and gives a feel of elegance and class which would appeal to the reader. It's in a pastel shade of orange which carries connotations of wealth, joy and prestige which could give off those sorts of vibes to an audience about the magazine and its content. It also could persuade the reader to feel such feelings.
Main cover image: the main cover image on this particular magazine is in black and white which it's quite striking and contrasts greatly with the colour used for the text. It is a full body shot and is taken in an urban outside setting. This makes it reals table to readers as that is where most readers will live in such like areas. It also relates to what the content of the magazine is portray as it is 'high street' and easily accessible. The picture sees Cheryl wearing an animal print coat, which has inspired the colour theme. It stand out to the eye but also creates a basis for the colour scheme. Usually leopard print is orange and yellow toned which is why the producer chose those shades for the text around the picture. It's almost deceiving to the eye as it makes it seem like that jacket could be in colour.
Cover lines: the cover lines on this magazine are written in the same font just varying between bold and normal text. It is written in a serif font which gives a feel of importance and attracts the eye to them. Again you can tell that it is aimed at a younger audience as it is about appearance and where to find things on the high street which suggests that it's at a cheaper price. ( due to a younger target audiences minimal income.)
The Left Third: compared to other magazines that I have looked at in this genre, this left third is very bare. Although this does not tell the reader about much of the content it does express the importance of that particular feature. The cover line is about loving your body which although is contradictory to what the magazine is selling (materialist products to a chance your appearance) is an important message to send to the reader which could be why it's on it's own. It could also help reduce the pressure on what younger women take from the magazine and that is that what they already have is to be loved as well as modified.
Colours: the colours on this particular magazine and very bland but do make a statement as mention before. It is in black and white and has the colours in the text. Also unlike the other magazines we have seen primary colours have not been used which indicates again a youthful feel, relating to the target demographic.
Cosmo:

Masthead: Cosmopolitan have chosen a pink masthead, in a serif font to cover the whole of the magazine. This is the same approach as the other magazines I have researched. Once again the head of the celeb on the front is covering part of the masthead showing brand confidence and celebrity significance. This time, the branding is in a hot pink colour that carries connotations of passion, fun,and all loving, meaning you should love yourself. The masthead on this magazine is also covered slightly by a cover line this tells the reader that this particular cover line is significant and should be read as a priority by the reader.
Cover lines: The above cover, is very busy with cover lines. There are a lot of them filling any spare space on the magazine around the picture. This could be for one of two reasons, the first being that the target audience may be very busy so this is a code for that or that the magazine are simply trying to display as much content as possible to attract a wider target audience. The cover lines clearly show that this magazine is aimed at women. You can tell this from the content, e.g new hairstyles with long or short hair, this itself tell us that its female orientated. They are all written in varying fonts and sizes which is a common feature of fashion magazines.
Main Cover Image: The main cover image on this magazine is of Miley Cyrus who is a character recognised by the age bracket of 25+which are who the magazine is aimed at. She is dressed in a nude dress with gemstones covering it, which indicates party and going out for celebrations or special events which relates to the time the magazine was released. (December - close to Christmas) Miley is also looking directly at the camera which has a direct effect on the reader and makes it more personal. This could encourage them the buy the magazine. Unlike the other magazines there is nothing in the background which directs more focus onto the other features of the cover e.g the person and the cover lines. Again Miley has perfected hair and makeup which creates an ideological image and portrays the idea of perfection and being flawless. She is smiling in the photo with  a cheeky expression on her face which relates to the controversial and slightly inappropriate natures of some of the cover lines but it also makes the picture appear more intriguing which will draw the audience in. The colours of the gems she is wearing in the photo are all jewel toned which match the rich pink that they text is written in around the magazine. The lighting in this photo is very soft and do not create any harsh shadows on Miley which give an idea of femininity  that will relate to the target demographic.
The Left Third: The left third is very busy on this cover as mentioned before. It contains many different coloured cover lines and has a large spot in the centre. This style, crams as much information onto the cover as possible which increases the chance of appealing to the audience. They vary in content, from appearance, to feelings and relationships which conclude what the magazine is written about.  This left third also contains the barcode which is unique compared to the other magazines that I have looked at.
Colours: The colour scheme is a very rich, jewel toned selection. This relates to the time of year but also can appeal to the audience as they are stereotypically 'girl' colours. The colours are all quite bold which are very powerful colours and portray a powerful message to the audience.

Conclusion:
Common and Successful Features of Fashion Magazines:
Bold, serif masthead that is covered by the head of the celebrity on the front. Covers the whole top of the magazine.
Colour scheme relating to the cover image.
Cover lines about appearance, using very powerful adjectives and bold statements.
Busy cover with lots of cover lines.
Colours that are all 'empowering' colours.

From the figures above I can see that all the magazines are successful in their own right, and using this information and other that has been collected I will use it to decipher specific successful features.
The median age of the readers of two of the three magazines is older than the potential age of my target audience and therefore I will have to take this into consideration and adapt certain features to suit my magazine.

Research: Points to Consider

Below are some areas of research that I may consider when creating my magazine. They are the initial points that I wanted to look into in order to make my magazine the best it could be.

Depicting a Target Audience from a Magazine Cover

Magazines covers are created with the purpose of attracting a specific target audience. Most have similar codes and conventions that are adapted to the theme of the cover.

Masthead: The masthead is the title of the magazine. On this front cover, the masthead covers the whole top portion of the page. It is written in a sans serif font which gives it a sophisticated and feminine feel which will appeal to the target audience.

Spot/Plug: A spot/ plug is a shape with extra information in. In this case the plug is a diagonal box that covers the masthead. Usually important information is contained within these boxes as they attract the attention of the reader first.

Cover Lines: cover lines are short, concise sentences that sum up the content of the magazine. They come in varying shades and sizes depending on the importance of the story within the magazine. For example, the most important story will often be the biggest font and will sometimes be written in a different colour from the rest. The cover lines on this magazine are written in a serif font showing concise and important information.

The Left Third: the left third of the magazine is most important as it is often the only thing that is seen when magazines are stacked on the shelves. Therefore, the producers of magazines put all the information that they think will attract an audience to buy it, on the left portion of the cover.

The Colours: The colour scheme of a magazine is also very important. Not only the colours must be chosen but the shades of the colours are very important. In this magazine light pastel colours have been chosen. This is because the magazine was published as the spring was drawing in and pastel colours are often association with spring. Also they are associated with females are they are very soft and gentle colours.

The Picture: More often than not the cover picture on a magazine is a person. On this cover it is Taylor Swift who is a young idol to her fans. She is looking directly at the reader making it feel more personal and direct to them.

Overall, when you put all of these codes together you can work out exactly what type of people the magazine is aimed at. It is clearly aimed at females. You can tell this from the colours used, as discussed before, and the content. The content is all about appearance, including fashion and make up which are typically what girls are interested in. This also indicates an age. The content relates to ladies that are in their 20's. You can tell this from the above features because most people in that category have money to spend on themselves as they don't have other responsibilities such as children and/or partners. It is also hinted that these girls may be single. You can get this from the fact that the makeup looks being described are 'simple', 'sexy' and 'romantic', which indicate that you are looking for love and attention from the opposite sex. In the bottom right hand corner, the cover line is also talking about men and relationships that didn't quite go to plan, suggesting that the reader is single.  Also due to the fact that Taylor Swift is on the front, justifies this theory also as she herself is a 20 year old female who takes care of her appearance and is seen as a fashion icon.

Target Audiences: Audience Profile

Media products are created to make a profit however they are created with the understanding that they can be sold or promoted to an audience.  All of these products are created with a specific target audience in mind.

The media use several different ways of creating an audience profile. They use things such as social grading, quantitative information and qualitative information to gauge an understanding of who will be interested in their products and whether they are worth publishing out into the wide network of media products.

Social Grading System:
Some media products are aimed at people that fit into the following categories:

Companies may also look at demographic information. This is factual information that can be used for creating products. This includes things such as

  • age group
  • gender
  • ethnicity
  • location
  • education
  • class
They may also consider physcographic information which is information that is personal to you and is made up of opinions and preferences. This could be:
  • politics
  • self-image
  • religion
  • interests
  • likes/dislikes.

Everything that you watch on the television has a target audience.

An example is The X-Factor.
It is an entertainment programme that is aimed at young people, or housewives with children. People audition in order to win a record contract with leading record label SyCo.

The social grade that the X-Factor target audience satisfies is Grade DE.
Using this and several other pieces of information, an audience profile can be created.
The typical audience profile for The X Factor:
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: British
Location: Essex
Education: GCSEs and a levels.
Occupation: Housewife
Likes: fashion, celeb gossip, cosmetics, stereotypical girly things.
Dislikes: football, dirt, politics.
Religion: no religion.
This is a typical person that the producers would aim their show and content at and they assume if she likes it then most other people in the same category will too.

Fashion Magazines are types of consumer magazines and vary largely in price. There are many different fashion magazines that come from many different countries but below is a list of the top ten best sellers in the UK.*

  1.  Glamour
  2. Cosmopolitan

*information taken from http://www.cision.com/uk/social-media-index/fashion-magazines-uk-top-10/

All fashion magazines have similar conventions that run throughout all of them they include the following:
  • feminine colours - aimed at the target audience of women.
  • a female as the main and only picture - suggesting that she is the most important feature of the magazine.
  • all women on the front covers are very glamorous - suggesting that women are and deserved to be beautiful at all times which is relatable to the target audience.
  • Vary texts around the perimeter of the magazine- including features of the magazines.
  • varying sizes of text to represent what is most important in the magazine - larger fonts catch the eye better so are the first things to be read.
  • all names of the magazines are large and central - clearly displayed.
  • most have some sort of number in quite large and bold font on the cover.
  • all have big named celebrities on the front which could lead people to read about the celebrity as well as the fashion content.

The Magazine Industry

Magazines line the shelves of local news agents, supermarkets and stores alike. They are found on coffee tables, trains and in the work place. But how often are they bought? And more importantly how often are they read?

There are six types of magazines:

1.     Consumer Magazines: these are the ones you will find sold in newsagents. They come in many different types e.g. gossip, fashion and gardening.

2.      B2B: are magazines that can be found in the workplace. they are often released to inform staff of things and events that are taking/have taken place within the workplace.

3.      Customer Publishing:  these are produced for organisations to give their customers as a form of marketing. For example magazines that are often found for free at the checkouts.

4.      Part Works: Magazines that have pieces attached to the front and you collect them in order to end up with a whole collection/a final product. e.g. model skeleton pieces.

5.      Newspaper supplements: The magazines you get free in newspapers.

6.      Academic Journals: Magazines aimed at certain group of people in education often written to a university degree standard.

The 6 variations are what make up the magazine industry and the circulation of magazines is always expressed in copies per issue. This is to make the results recorded most accurate and it makes it easier to see which types of magazine sell best.

The total circulation for  the first six months in 2014 was 21.2million copies per issue on average. However this had fallen 10% from the previous six months. This could be due to the increased popularity of the internet. People are now able to log on and with a few clicks find all the information they were looking for, for free, meaning they don't have to wait for the copy of the magazine to be published containing the desired content. It is usually quicker and more convenient so therefore not as many magazines are being sold.

Although magazine circulation* is decreasing magazine readership** is still healthy. On average 1.4 people read a copy of the magazine. They can be found in doctors surgeries and other waiting rooms and although the reader hasn't bought the magazine they are still reading it.

*Magazine circulation is when people buy copies.
**Magazine readership is when people read magazines without necessarily buying them.

Although magazine sales are falling some genres are doing better than others:
Lads magazines, pop magazines and gossip magazine sales are dropping, whilst Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair and other lifestyle magazines sales are rising.

Despite this the most popular magazine in the UK is the TV Choice magazine. It has a circulation of 1,282,276 per issue due to its large target audience. Its content is common and of interest to a lot of people. These sales figures bring in £549,976 per issue and the producers earn a hefty £300,000 from advertising alone per week. This leads to them making a profit of £879,000 per issue.

So despite the drop in circulation numbers the industry is still thriving and producers of the magazines are still earning megabucks.

Should celebrities have the right to privacy, without media invasion?

Being in the limelight and having the ‘celebrity’ title comes at a price. Although life seems to the prying eye to be all glitz and glamour, behind the scenes and in reality it’s not all it’s made out to be.

Actors, singers, politicians, presenters, authors and even the royal family experience a breach of human privacy. Some people say ‘oh its what they signed up for’ and ‘they enjoy publishing their lives’ and yes in some cases this is true, however in others it couldn’t be more different.

Undeniably, journalists do have a difficult job, challenging their morals of people’s seclusion with fulfilling their job role. But are there clear limits as to how much of celebrity’s lives the media can publish? Obviously not, because each and every aspect of a celebrity’s life is consumed by an article, headline or photograph, raising questions such as is it ethically right to sit outside a child’s nursery and take pictures of them with long distance lenses through the windows just because their parents are in a high profile job?

76% of the public that participated in a survey on the topic agree that people living in the spotlight have to right to a private life and freedom in their own surroundings.  Some say ‘paparazzi have no right to interfere in what people do outside of their work.’  This statement sums up the reason that it’s wrong for a-listers to have to experience the harassment and intrusion that the press cause in their lives. What they do to earn money, whether it be acting or singing, is a job, and just like every other human being they should be able to leave their metaphorical ‘office’ and return home and back to their personal lives without it being displayed all over the glossy pages of a magazine or on the front page of the newspaper. Just like the next person they should be able to make mistakes and learn from them without the fear of it jeopardising their whole career.

Furthermore, although a lot of the blame of the invasion of privacy is on the press, behind that lay an army of consumers for whom the stories are being created. Some people strive on reading about others lives, the misfortunes and the amazing opportunities but when does it all become too much for the victims of the brutal industry? Would it affect your quality of life if everything you wanted to keep secret and personal was exploited for the world to see?

In conclusion, with fame comes a certain amount of attention, and celebrities understand that they become role models and have to set good examples but as well as this, all consumers and fans of these high profile people should understand that they are still human and have emotions. They still need space and time to themselves as much as the rest of us and so the should be granted that because at the end of the day, think how you would feel if you had your every move scrutinised and judged by the rest of the world and think how it would feel to have the truth twisted and lies written about you and the things you care about.
